GMT Promotes Cold War Spy Thriller FAREWELL
July 24, 2010 Movie News from GMT Games |
| | | | | Dear GMT Customer, This is a short note to make you guys aware of a cross-promotion opportunity that recently came our way. As you know, it's unusual for our hobby to get much notice in the mainstream press or the movie industry. So we were intrigued when we had an opportunity recently to do a promotional collaberation with the makers of the Cold War era spy thriller, Farewell, which opens in selected theaters this weekend and across the country over the next couple of months. As a result of conversations with the fine folks at NeoClassics Films, they are running selected promotions for our Twilight Struggle game in their advertising in major movie markets around the country. We have donated some copies of Twilight Struggle to help with their giveaway promotions. We have no way to really gauge at this point what impact this added exposure will have, but we feel this is a good opportunity for getting the word out about GMT and Twilight Struggle beyond the usual boardgame venues. It's not everyday that we get to see the GMT logo and promotion info in a movie ad (see below) in the Los Angeles Times, as we did recently. So this opportunity is definitely interesting to us. The folks at NeoClassics Films wanted to send advertising e-mail directly to you guys, but of course we do not give out our customer information to anyone for any reason. But we want to make sure we do our part in helping to get the word out about their movie, so in the spirit of cross-promotion, we agreed to send this e-mail to all of you guys giving you information about and links to the website for Farewell. We'll also be posting a news story and links on our website. We haven't seen the movie yet, but everything we've read and heard about Farewell is good. I recently watched the trailer online with one of my daughters, and now both of us can't wait to see it. At GMT, we are game players with keen interests in history, so we're always interested in a good story, especially one that portrays an era covered by one of our games. We encourage you guys to take a look at the information listed in the FilmMaker Letter, below, and check out the NeoClassics Films Farewell website (it includes a trailer as well as a list of dates and locations for the movie openings) to see whether this movie is of interest to you. We hope you get to see and enjoy Farewell, and as always, we hope you continue to... Enjoy the games! Gene |

to a friend | | Exclusive Filmmaker Letter from Director Christian Carion
Dear Film Club Members,Few people know of the Farewell Affair, which played such a crucial part in the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
I wanted to tell this story in film, not simply because it deserves its place in public memory, but also because I felt really drawn to certain aspects of the story.
It is first and foremost a humanistic tale. One man in Moscow in 1981 decided to do something to change things, and 8 years later, everything changed.
I like when the seeming footnotes of history impact on the bigger picture and when the destiny of the world is changed as a result. In a certain sense, Farewell is an extension of my last film. While the men in Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas) performed an unthinkable act which would have no real incidence on the march of history, here, in Farewell, a single individual plays a major part in changing the worldwide scheme of things...
I found the idea of inter-cutting scenes of daily life in Moscow with the atmospheres which reign in the halls of power, such as the Elysée Palace in Paris or the White House in Washington, particularly attractive. The general public is far more partial to the world of politics than we think. I wanted to show how a number of documents photographed in Moscow could bring together two men, who in theory were totally incompatible: Ronald Reagan and François Mitterrand.
Another feature of this tale is that we don't know the whole story, and probably never will. It is only fitting that an espionage affair maintains its shadow side. Read more... Farewell Game Giveaway Enter for a chance to own a copy of Twilight Struggle, the ultimate Cold War Strategy Board Game from GMT Games, courtesy of NeoClassics Films! The game (a $55 value) focuses on the same period in history as the gripping spy thriller Farewell, where the Soviet Union is at odds with the United States and where spy networks and secrets divulged can change the course of history. To be eligible, you must answer the following question correctly: According to the film's official web site, what was Colonel Grigoriev's real name?
PLEASE DO NOT HIT REPLY! Send your response via email to comments@landmarktheatres.com by Thursday, July 29, 2010. Please write "Farewell Game Giveaway" in the email subject line. Include your full name and mailing address in the body of the email. One entry per Film Club member. A limited number of Film Club members will be chosen at random from all correct entries and notified via email. |

| Farewell

Engaging, emotional and riveting, Farewell is an intricate and highly intelligent thriller pulled from the pages of history-about an ordinary man thrust into the biggest theft of Soviet information of the Cold War. A piece of history largely unknown until now, Farewell begins in 1981, when U.S./Soviet relations are at their lowest point in more than a decade. A French businessman based in Moscow, Pierre Froment (French director Guillaume Canet, Tell No One), makes an unlikely connection with Grigoriev (Palme d'Or and Golden Bear winner Emir Kusturica, Underground), a senior KGB officer disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins passing him highly sensitive information about the Soviet spy network in the U.S. Torn between the fear of putting his wife (Alexandra Maria Lara) and children in danger and the desire to know more, Froment brings the documents to the French government. Soon, the flow of information reaches the White House and brings the Soviet regime to the tipping point of collapse, forcing the KGB to escalate its search for the leak, and placing the two men and their families in extreme peril. Directed by Christian Carion, the Academy Award nominated filmmaker of Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas).
Farewell starts Friday, July 23 at The Landmark in West Los Angeles. | | |

Charging and Shipping Update
Guys,
We've had a delay on the Germantown counters that is going to push it into mid-late August. So we will go ahead with charging tomorrow and Friday for only Normandy and C3i Issue #24 and then shipping only those TWO products on August 2. We'll charge and ship Germantown along with Dominant Species in late August.
For you WBC attendees, this will most likely allow us to get your Normandy '44 to Andy at WBC, but I am going to let Andy handle working with you guys to get that set up.
Sorry for this slight delay. Hopefully having Normandy '44 to play and C3i #24 to read will help you pass the time until Germantown is ready. :-)
Enjoy the games!

July 19 Update
|
Dear GMT Customer,
Things have been somewhat hectic of late here at the GMT offices, as summer vacations have disrupted our work schedules a bit. Then again, we kinda LIKE those vacations and crave a little time away from computers and offices. We hope you guys, too, are getting some time away to enjoy a vacation with family and friends. And we hope, like us, you get to take a boardgame or two along!
As you'll note from our production update section below, our summer production continues unabated, with plenty of new products to (we hope) keep you guys entertained. We have made a key adjustment to our fall release schedule at the request of a game's designer. We hate to wait a little longer for the game, but we'd always rather have a game be done right than done early.
We hope you guys are getting plenty of opportunities to play your favorite games this summer. We want to remind you, too, that with our free Vassal and Cyberboard modules (for virtually all of our games), you'll rarely if ever be without an opponent. If you don't currently play our games online but would like to, check out the sections of our website for Cyberboard Gameboxes and Vassal Modules. If you have any questions about how to play online, feel free to contact me (Gene) at gmtgames@aol.com and I'll get you with one of our online helpers who will be happy to help you get started.
One last thing. Personally, I always look forward to the next Mark Simonitch-designed game. I think I own every game Mark has ever designed, and they never fail to provide me with many hours of gaming enjoyment. Well, Mark's Normandy '44 is shipping late next week, and I can't wait to play it! With over 1,000 P500 orders, I guess many of you guys feel the same way. So, to whet your appetites a bit, here's a small version of Rodger's cover for the game. We hope you like it!
Enjoy the games!
